Love isn’t a feeling, it is an attitude. And more than an attitude, it is the actions that come from that attitude. Love is doing kind things for someone without asking anything in return. It’s forgetting about what somebody did that hurt you, or being kind to them even when they’ve been rude to you. Or even if you’ve never met them.

If he makes you feel good by being around, tell him that he makes you feel good by being around, if you want. If you miss him when he’s gone, tell him that too. If you get mildly aroused when he does that stupid thing he likes to do, hey, you might as well tell him that too. These are all just feelings though.

Love is, in a way, more and less significant at the same time. It’s more significant in that it can last, even when your infatuation wears off. And because it’s actual meaningful action, rather than just an experience or mode of mind. But it’s less significant for almost the exact same reason. You can love, with your actions, someone you don’t even have a feeling-of-like for. You can with your actions love someone you are actively offended by.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t get too worked up over the phrase. Think instead about what love really means, and about what your feelings really are. You communicate more truth by specifics and by actions than you can by the “three little words” that are the bread-and-butter of greeting-card manufacturers and moderately-skilled songwriters.
